It was a cold day Jan. 21 following our 6-inch snowfall, but it was an awesome day at Flint Creek Savanna as Pat Winkleman, board member of Citizens for Conservation, and Dawn Keller, founder of Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation, led an in-flight raptor class across the prairie and into the old oak savanna, where the 200-hundred-year-old trees are even more majestic up close, their bare branches silhouetted against the winter sky.

There were light winds when children and adults dressed for temperatures in the 20s, prepared to hike a one-mile trail at Citizens for Conservation-owned Flint Creek Savanna. They prepared to view various birds of prey in a natural setting as part of a Leave No Child Inside supported activity. Dawn Keller, president of Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation, instructed everyone on how to behave when approaching each of the volunteers holding a live bird.

Here we are at the end of another year that has continued the tremendous volunteerism that distinguishes the Barrington area. Much of that volunteerism is generated in our Barrington North area. Throughout the year I have tried to feature in my columns the people and organizations that give and receive that generosity.

Among those who deserve our support and admiration is Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation, founded and headed by Dawn Keller.

Our most recent visitor, though, had us stumped. Around 6 p.m. Monday, my husband opened the front door to check on the Christmas lights and spied a large bird of prey just sitting on the porch.

This crowd did not gather for a ball game or a protest, or to gawk at some sort of disaster. They came to the banks of the sleepy Illinois River to witness a little miracle — a happy ending, or an anxious beginning, depending on how you look at it.

Two young bald eagles were about to be released into the wild, more than five months after a storm blew them 85 feet to the ground from their nest, high atop a tree in suburban Chicago.
